Postgraduate Doctoral Studies

Graduates of the graduate programs (M.Sc.) may continue their studies in the postgraduate doctoral programs. The doctoral study is a higher, postgraduate form of education, provided in several accredited scientific disciplines by the faculty. The study takes individual form. It consists of lecture courses and it is concluded by dissertation examination and defence of the dissertation thesis, which is to prove that the student is capable of individual scientific work. The students are prepared to solve the most complex problems concerning applied science and research.
Graduates of the postgraduate programs gain the academic title of “philosophiae doctor” (Ph.D.).
The faculty provides postgraduate doctoral education in 9 study programs and in 7 scientific disciplines. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering currently provides the following postgraduate study programs:

Postgraduate Doctoral Study Programs


Rail Vehicles

Graduates of the postgraduate study program gain knowledge and skills required for research and development in the sphere of rail vehicles, for rationalization and quality improvement and project management of rail vehicle maintenance. They also gain knowledge required to improve efficiency of their operation, taking into account the ecological aspects.
Graduates are capable of independent scientific work. They are prepared to creatively develop their abilities and continue to gain further knowledge of the scientific discipline.


Applied Mechanics

Graduates of the postgraduate doctoral program gain knowledge and skills necessary in research concerning mechanical fields, behaviour of technical and technological objects under difficult conditions and development of new numeric models and software required to solve these problems. They are prepared to solve the most complex industrial tasks (e.g. improve and optimize the technical and technological aspects of product quality, or help to understand behaviour of objects using computer simulation and similar). The graduate is able to use commercial software in a wide range of applications and possesses deep theoretical knowledge of the corresponding processes. Graduates are capable of independent scientific work. They are prepared to creatively develop their abilities and continue to gain further knowledge of the scientific discipline.


Automated Production Systems

Graduates of the postgraduate doctoral program gain knowledge and skills necessary for research and development in the sphere of automation of machine production. They gain theoretical knowledge of technological processes and of their applications in mechanical engineering industry, taking into consideration the qualitative, technical, economical and ecological aspects. They are prepared to solve the most complex industrial tasks.
The graduates are prepared for work in research and development divisions of production enterprises, for top management positions, for management of production departments using sophisticated production technology, for work on workplaces of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and at technical universities. They are as well able to work in firms and organisations providing consulting, where higher level of technical knowledge is required. Graduates are capable of independent scientific work. They are prepared to creatively develop their abilities and continue to gain further knowledge of the scientific discipline.


Limit States of Materials

Graduates of the Limit States of Materials program possess knowledge of the scientific research and development methods. They know how the structural metallic and non-metallic materials are used and assessed, focusing – for example – on research of biomaterials, nanomaterials, high temperature materials, materials for long-term load in high radiation environment, corrosive environment, materials for high-speed machining, ultra-light materials, materials for microelectronics and similar.
Graduates are capable of independent scientific work. They are prepared to creatively develop their abilities and continue to gain further knowledge of the scientific discipline. They are able to solve the most complex industrial task.


Machine Parts and Mechanisms

Graduates of the Machine Parts and Mechanisms graduate study program (M.Sc.) gain necessary knowledge of scientific subjects such as solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermomechanics, engineering II – parts of machines, elasticity and strength, engineering methodology, simultaneous design and optimization, CAD systems, finite element method and similar, which together with other subjects oriented on design and technology, form a theoretical and scientific basis for study in the Machines and Equipment Design program and other.
Utilizing this base of knowledge, the graduate of the postgraduate level gain deeper understanding of applied scientific disciplines focusing on design and engineering of machine parts and mechanisms. The postgraduate doctoral studies also regard research, development and further improvement of methods, equipment and technologies, currently used in research, development and design of machine parts and mechanisms and of their prototypes. Students have the opportunity to fine-tune their specialisation by selecting from a list of elective subjects from the spheres concerning development of procedures, methods and knowledge of 3D modelling and creation of virtual models, simulation, optimization and analysis using the finite element method, innovation, computational and simulation methods for structural and dynamic analysis and optimization of machine parts and mechanisms.


Mechanical Engineering Technologies and Materials

Graduates of the postgraduate study program gain knowledge and skills necessary for research and development of new technologies and materials. They obtain theoretical knowledge of technological processes and of their application in mechanical engineering industry, taking into consideration the qualitative, technical, economical and ecological aspects. They are capable of solving the most complex industrial tasks.

Graduates of the postgraduate doctoral program gain knowledge and skills necessary for research and development of new materials. They are prepared to solve the most complex industrial tasks (e.g. improve properties of existing materials, to perfect the technical aspects of material production quality, of parts, tools, utilities and similar).
Graduates are capable of independent scientific work. They are prepared to creatively develop their abilities and continue to gain further knowledge of the scientific discipline.


Industrial Engineering and Management

Graduate of the 3rd, postgraduate level of university education gains knowledge of scientific research methods especially focusing on management, economic sciences, scientific techniques concerning design of production, of complex systems and processes, as well as of computer-based forecasting.
Students of the Industrial Engineering and Management postgraduate program are trained to utilize systems science in the industrial sphere as well as in other spheres of society. They are able to solve the most complex industrial tasks. They are prepared to work independently as well as in teams and able to creatively develop their abilities and continue to gain further knowledge of the scientific discipline.


Energy Machines and Equipment

Graduates of the postgraduate doctoral program gain knowledge and skills necessary in research and development of new energy machines and equipment from the sphere of their specialisation. They are able to form, develop and solve the most complex industrial tasks (e.g. design, engineer and improve the properties of the existing energy machines and equipment, to perfect their technical aspects and quality and similar). Graduates are capable of independent scientific work. They are prepared to creatively develop their abilities and continue to gain further knowledge of the scientific discipline.
Graduates possess knowledge of the scientific methods concerning research and development of energy machines and equipment from the sphere of their specialisation. They understand the principles of scientific work and know the chain of relationship between research-development-production-utilization-recycling. They understand the legal and environmental aspects of new products, ethical and social aspects of scientific work and they are able to present the results of their work in an appropriate way.
